Nigel Gafney is an accomplished attorney with three decades of experience in commercial litigation, property law, and conveyancing. He began his career as an articled clerk at Werksmans Attorneys in Johannesburg, gaining early exposure to multinational corporate work and complex commercial contracts.
He went on to serve as an attorney at Garlicke & Bousfield Attorneys in Durban, one of the region’s firms, where he specialized in insurance, commercial, estate, insolvency, and property litigation. During this time, he represented major financial institutions, worked alongside senior counsel in the High Court, and developed his own client base.
In 1998, Nigel established Gafney and Associates attorneys and conveyancers in Umhlanga Rocks, KwaZulu-Natal, building a respected practice in general commercial litigation and property law. His leadership and vision created a strong client base and a reputation for excellence in legal services.
Nigel’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Natal at Pieternaritzburg, as well as a Certificate in Tax Law. He furthered his expertise internationally by completing an MBA at Nijenrode University in the Netherlands. He focused on European commercial law, international taxation, corporate finance, and financial markets. His thesis, conducted with Coopers & Lybrand Management Consultants, analyzed competitive dynamics in the Dutch telecommunications industry.
Beyond his legal and business career, Nigel gained valuable experience in finance through work at Nedbank’s foreign exchange department and in London’s mortgage sector. He also served as a Military Law Officer in the South African Defence Force, attaining the rank of Lieutenant.
Nigel’s interests include golf, cricket, tennis, travel, and skiing. He is proficient in modern business applications and remains committed to combining legal expertise with practical business insight.
Kim began her legal career at Gafney and Associates assisting with the administrative and financial functions within the firm. She quickly developed strong organizational and client‑facing skills. From there, she moved into the Litigation Department, where she spent approximately ten years dealing with Magistrates Court work, specialising in the collection of moneys for a major financial institution and also for other corporate clients.
Thereafter Kim transitioned into the Conveyancing Department, where she have now worked for over twelve years. In this role, she has specialized in attending to residential property transfers and all aspects of deceased estate transfers. She also assists with the administration of deceased estates and deals extensively with staff at the masters offices. Kim is known to be very diligent and extremely dedicated to ensuring that clients matters are dealt with promptly and efficiently with the minimum delay. She has managed to build up a loyal and respected client base.
She began her employment with Gafney and Associates as a receptionist and assistant. She also assists in managing the daily operations of the firm.
For the past nine years, she has been a trusted member of the team, dealing extensively with the Master’s Office and municipal rates departments. Through this work, she has built strong, professional relationships across these departments, ensuring smoother communication and more efficient resolution of matters. Her role requires persistence, precision, and diplomacy, and she consistently delivers results that keep processes moving forward. She also experience in the collection of debts in the Magistrates Court.
Her dedication and reliability have made her a key point of contact within the firm, balancing administrative responsibilities with client service and departmental support.
